Today we went to go and see the Pope, in of course, Vatican City. The weather was way to scorching out to be wearing the correct attire to go into the buildings unfortunately and we didn't pack correctly to suit the dress codes required but that just means we have to return again. Instead we sat outside the buildings admiring them, because they really were very royal looking buildings!
You are allowed through the gates into the grounds of the building, but you aren't allowed any further, but you can get very close despite not having a ticket or any security checks! We thought this was strange, considering it's a building for the Pope.
The only downside to this freely roaming section, is one of the biggest problems within tourists when you come to Rome and that is the illegal street sellers. They have bags packed full of goodies they wish for you to buy, anything from selfie sticks to bottles of water. However these bottles of water, to put you off buying them, although you can drink the water in Rome because it is filtered just like ours at home. The water is actually filled up inside opened bottles that they find out of the bins... so they don't have a seal on them, and they aren't even filled up level to make it look like they are either, despite the fact they try and tell you that it is a fresh new bottle. I don't know if you mind sharing a bottle with the rest of Rome, but we sure do!
One lady felt she was actually being harassed by one of these men, luckily there are multiple police around so she went over and explained, this man was then thrown out of the area, however all his friends merely threw their goods inside their bags and opted to look like a tourist to not get caught themselves, clever I suppose!
Do not let this put you off coming here, and I highly recommend before you travel to Rome to look up the correct attire in order to enter the churches and buildings so you don't miss out on everything that this place has to offer like we unfortunately have!
